Abdi Nor Iftin and Mama Malyun

I am finally releasing my interview with author Abdi Nor Iftin. If you've been following my podcast and blog posts, this man needs no introduction. We sat down at the Bisbeens and Rice space in Bisbee, to talk about his experiences growing up in Somalia, and about his new book. Included as well, is an interview with Mama Malyun, a celebrity within the Somali community, who we were able to sit down with in the Phoenix area. She is an outspoken women's rights activist and feminist, now living in the States. Included on the blog is the video that Abdi did for Mama Malyun's YouTube show. I've also included links to an organization that helps women find their voice in Somalia, including links to where you can find Abdi's book, Call Me American. Jeff and Dee Foote, the owners of the Uptown 3 Theatre in Sierra Vista were kind enough to chat with me about their upcoming screening of Bisbee 17, the documentary about the Bisbee deportation of 1917. Thanks everyone for supporting the show so far. I'm going to release the tracks I have recorded, back to back, from different artists who have come to sit down with me. Abdi Nor Iftin - Call Me American - Chapter 4 - Passage

Here is another passage from Abdi Nor Iftin's book, Call Me American. I thought this section of chapter 4 was particularly interesting, as it is the start of his journey into a fascination with American culture. Once again, he will be promoting his book here in Arizona. Full info: - September 7th, 2018 - Tucson - Barnes and Noble (West) - 7325 N. The Blues Wizard

Today's interview is with Keith Kifer, 'The Blues Wizard'. He came to Bisbee a few years ago and has been filling our little town with the sounds of his custom made 'found object' instruments ever since. He creates instruments out of objects, like hubcaps and gas tanks, and let's not forget suitcases! Growing up in California, we talk about how that impacted his interpretation of the blues, authenticity, and how he found acceptance in Clarksdale, Mississippi, a town steeped in Delta blues history. On the page are some links and a video he filmed here in Bisbee, with other local musicians. Lunatic Fringe Luthiery The Legend of the Blues Wizard

Abdi Nor Iftin - Call Me American - Chapter 1 - Passage

I've been enjoying the monsoon rains here. My ocotillos are looking thick and beautiful. The creosote bushes are pungent and keep me up at night, simply because I don't want to stop smelling them! I'm sure in my dream state I have incorporated the smell as well, though. It doesn't last long here in the desert, and I'm soaking it in. All of this to say that I have no interview this week. If I could interview the ocotillos and creosote bushes, I would. Here is a passage from Abdi Nor Iftin's book, Call Me American. I'm posting the flyer here as well, for his upcoming book tour dates here in Southern Arizona. I pose a question at the end of this short episode. I'll include some links to music and Jaime's record label that he talks about. Who was W. C. Handy? Ever wanted to mosey down the Tennessee River? Learn more about Muscle Shoals and its role in shaping the blues? Also, learn about Pete's days in San Francisco, including stories about growing up with Jesse Thorn, the founder of Maximum Fun and the host of NPR's interview show, Bullseye. Abdi Nor Iftin in Tucson and Bisbee - GoFundMe

I will be bringing Abdi Nor Iftin to Bisbee, for my show, and for his book tour, with a date also being set up in Tucson. This will happen in September.  His publisher will not be funding this trip, so I have decided to fund it myself, keeping my community in mind. This will be a great opportunity, bringing this great writer to our town.  Abdi's story about immigrating to the US from Somalia was featured on This American Life a few weeks ago, and his new book, Call Me American, is now on the shelves.  This estimated $500 is to cover the cost of gas (I will be driving around the state with him) and the cost of the plane tickets. He will be staying with me, and with family in Phoenix, so there will be no lodging costs for him. Any additional funds I raise will go to Adbi, or to wherever he decides to send it.  Here is a link to the gofundme page: https://www.gofundme.com/abdi-nor-iftin-in-bisbee-help Call Me American

Birds and Arrows

Listen to us wax lyrical about Tom Petty, chat about stories behind songs and talk about Banjo, the pampered pooch with a bigger trailer than the other dogs. What on earth am I talking about? I don't know, it's late and I'm burnt out from the day, but need to get this released by midnight. Don't worry, I'm maintaining consistency in podcast releases! Look at me go! Here is my interview with Andrea and Pete from Birds and Arrows. The two songs you here is 'Edgewood' and then 'Adrift', recorded here at the Red Mountain Property. Birds and Arrows

Nathan Hinojosa

Last month, I sat down with this young man here, and learned a lot about how much of his life is far outside of the mainstream way of thinking in this country. It was refreshing, as someone who grew up with punk rock roots, but has become very by-the-book in most aspects of life, to sit down with someone who hasn't given up and fallen into the trap of 'the matrix'. Want to know what the hell I'm talking about? Give my interview with Nathan Hinojosa a listen. We also talked about the Concert without Borders. I have included some more information about this important border concert in this post. Nathan Hinojosa Concert Without Borders NOTE: I am aware, and ashamed, as an English teacher, that I referred to 'her' in 'her story' as a pronoun. While it can be used as a pronoun, 'her' is a determiner, not a pronoun, in this sentence structure. I apologize to any pedantic grammar nerds out there. No need to send emails. Please forgive me.

Jelle van der Munnik

Here is my interview with a young cyclist named Jelle van der Munnik. He just recently graduated from college in his home country of The Netherlands, and decided to get on his bicycle and ride from Canada all the way to Argentina. He arrived into our little town, having already traveled through the entire USA. He crossed into Mexico at Naco, Sonora/Arizona a few weeks back and has been having a great time traveling through Sonora. Below are the links I promised I would include, as well as the video from El Imparcial TV. ¡Que impresionante este hombre! Él habla español muy bien en este entrevista en el video. David Butler - Kozmic Karma

Happy Father's Day! This is my first interview at the new Red Mountain Property Studio, at the base of the Mule Mountains here in lovely, Bisbee, Arizona. This week, I sat down with my father! David Butler, who is recording right now under the band name Kozmic Karma. I've included some links to his music on the blog page. It was a blast to talk about his journey with music over the years. We come from a multi-generational family of musicians. What deep, personal stories will we tell? Listen to find out! I've included some pictures of the new property as well. Thanks for your support! Here are the lyrics to 'Keep Your Dreams Alive': Do you get the feeling you've been here before? We live more than one life of that I'm sure And when you find that you've got a second chance You want to make the most of your past 'Cause everyone gets lost along the way Going through the motions day by day Sometimes we need to be alone To try to fi

Dan Simonis

This week I have Dan Simonis, a Bisbee local. We talked about the Southwest, tall tales and lore of the desert, and Texas. We touch on his project, the West Texas Millionaires, and he shares some stories from when he was touring with that group. Below is the video we talk about in the interview, for the song, "West Texas Town". Dan and his wife own The Courtyard, a lovely space and music venue right in the heart of Old Bisbee. Links below. Bisbee En Vivo

A todos nuestros oyentes hispanohablantes... vamos a lanzar mas material que es bilingüe en adelante. Siento que es importante para mí y para la comunidad. Gracias por escuchar.

Katie Haverly

Katie Haverly is a recording artist from Tucson. We talked about the Southwest, and what can come out of you, when you hole yourself up in a cabin in the woods long enough. We also talked about the inspiration behind some of her songs, and the look, feel and mood of the music video of her song, Wreckage, off of her latest album, Pluto. She and her guitarist, Ben Nisbet, played two songs for us, including a song that hasn't been released on any album yet. What a treat! I'll provide some links on the blog, including her two upcoming shows I'm promoting (June 2018), and I'll stick in the Wreckage video. Of Sea and Stone

Here is my interview with Luke and Morgan from Of Sea and Stone. Make sure to visit  www.ofseaandstone.com . We spent a lovely day together, walking around Bisbee. Here's a video I captured of those two singing along with Bisbee's Blues Wizard in his music shop, and a picture of Luke and Morgan outside of the KBRP studio!

Jean Caffeine

We're heading a bit backwards this week, just to catch up on the interviews. This was my first recording for Bisbee Live. This week, I’m releasing the podcast version of my interview with Jean Caffeine, who came to Bisbee a few weeks ago to play a gig, promoting her new album Sadie Saturday Night. Sadie Saturday Night is not only her latest album release, but also the name of her one woman show about growing up in San Francisco, during the explosion of punk rock in the late 70s. Be sure to checkout sadiesaturdaynite.com and also jeancaffeine.com to find out more about her music and where you can go see her show. This interview was recorded in the KBRP studio in the Bisbee Royale building, downtown.

Leigh Lesho

This month I sat down with Leigh Lesho, a recording artist based out of Tucson. We talked about the songwriting process, her work as a yoga coach and how that ties into her experiences with softball, equine therapy for people who fall on the autism spectrum, and so much more. This is the uncut version, recorded in the KBRP studio, with the broadcast version being released on May 13th, 2018. Leigh and her work can be found at  https://www.leighlesho.com/ PODCAST LINK
